As summer nights get shorter and shorter, we’re reminded that autumn will be here soon. There are plenty of things to get done as a home owner, so here is our list of top to-dos.

1. Get your HVAC system and equipment cleaned and serviced
It’s no surprise here, we’re always looking for ways to improve fuel oil efficiency. Take care of your annual cleaning now and you’ll be all set for fall and the first time you need to turn up the heat.

2. Power wash and refinish the deck
End of summer is the perfect time to get a fresh finish on your wood surfaces. Do it before the leaves start to drop, you don’t want them sticking to your freshly treated deck.

3. Clean and inspect your windows
Get the last of summer’s pollen and rain residue off your window panes and shutters. Its also a great time to inspect them for leaks, bad weather stripping, cracks or damages.

4. Oil your moving parts like hinges and garage doors
This task is most effective during summer before cold temperatures effect the viscosity of oil. You can clear your home of squeaks and make sure your garage door is well greased and effective for the next six months.

5. Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector
This one is easy to forget during the year so it’s good to put on the to do list. Make sure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide are functioning properly and have a well charged battery.

6. Stock up on winterization supplies
It may seem like it’s too soon, but we’ve found it’s better to have a supply on hand than to make a trip to the store when you need things. Consider creating a small inventory or storage tote with everything you need for sealing and insulating your house like window seals and weather-stripping.

7. Clean your Gutters
Trees are dropping seeds, leaves and sticks all year. Get ready for fall and help prevent gutter blockage by clearing out and cleaning your gutters now.

8. Get the garage or shed ready
Make sure your work space is organized and ready for the season change. That means pulling out the rakes, giving leaf and snow blowers a tune up and making a home for summer equipment. The more prepared you are for the seasonal change, the better your year will shape up to be!
